A dull ache. A pulsating pain. Pressure around the forehead. The feeling of a tight band gripping the head. According to the American Migraine Foundation, it’s estimated that at least 39 million Americans live with migraines, and approximately 45 million suffer from headaches. People of all ages experience headaches and migraines. They often turn to medication, which only masks the pain, but doesn’t get to the cause.
What Are Common Triggers?
Here are some typical reasons why people suffer from headaches and migraines:
- Hormonal changes
- Stress
- Neck tension
- Jaw tension
- Certain foods
- What you drink
- Too much or too little sleep
- Sports injuries, such as concussion
- Auto accident injuries
Many Types of Headaches
Did you know there are more than 150 types of headaches? These are divided into three categories: primary headaches, secondary headaches and other headaches. Common types of headaches are those due to stress and tension.
Many people don’t realize their muscle tension can give them a headache that feels like there’s a tight band around their head. A headache that originates from the neck is called a cervicogenic headache, and can cause shooting pain around the head. TMJ headaches commonly present in the temples and cause throbbing pain. Because different types of headaches (i.e. muscle tension or cervicogenic headache) can lead to a migraine, it’s important to catch the headache early with adjustments.
